Job Description:

The new role of Communications Manager – North of England is our key interface with northern city regions, and their elected and senior stakeholders. This includes engaging with organisations such as Transport for the North, the Rail North Committee, Transport North East, Tees Valley Combined Authority and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, all of which have formal processes that we aim to be part of and influence.

As well as delivering a programme of proactive stakeholder engagement with organised northern groups, this role is a key liaison between the North and the wider Communications team, to ensure northern stakeholder and media considerations are well represented.

The role requires proactive engagement with northern stakeholders to enable LNER to plan with greater awareness of expectations amongst northern leaders, by working closely with the LNER timetable team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Engaging with others in the rail industry who are also engaging with the same transport forums in the North of England, building productive relationships to support the alignment of industry positions
  • Supporting senior colleagues in engagement with these forums and senior external personnel, including providing advice and briefing materials to support their engagement
  • Being LNER’s representative with key North of England stakeholders, with the goal of strengthening relationships and ensuring a smooth information flow between those stakeholders and relevant LNER teams
  • Ensuring the communications team is sufficiently aware of developments in the region – with both stakeholders and media – working with colleagues to produce communications content as required
  • Playing a full part in LNER’s timetable and commercial planning forums, to ensure the voice of senior stakeholders in the North of England is heard and responded to

Job Requirements:

  • Excellent influencing skills, experience of lobbying local and national officials
  • Knowledge or interest in rail or transport policy and/or planning is desirable
  • Stakeholder engagement experience is essential, with a thorough understanding of the North of England region
  • Crisis communications experience is desirable
  • Knowledge of the rail industry would be highly advantageous
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
